The events are presented by: the Canadian Consulate of Chicago, the Consulate General of France, the Consulate General of the Republic of Haïti, the Consulate General of Romania, the Consulate General of Switzerland and the Service de la Francophonie of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Berne, Switzerland, the the Swiss Club and the Swiss Benevolent Society of Chicago, the Wallonia Trade and Investment Office and the Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Belgium in Chicago and the Alliance Française de Chicago and the Jean Brown Lecture Fund of the Alliance Française de Chicago. With the generous contribution of Air France, official partner of the 2008 Festival de la Francophonie The French language unites over 175 million people from many different countries and continents which attests to the global reach of this beautifully expressive language. Its international influence will certainly be evident during the 2016 Olympic Games when French joins English as the two official languages. Join us this March, le mois de la francophonie, as we celebrate la langue française and the rich diversity of the Francophone cultures it is a part of.
SPECIAL LECTURE by Francesco RAGAZZI Immigration and National Identity in France: What do they mean? Lecture in English Wednesday, March 5, 6:15 p.m. AFC members: $5, General Public: $7 This talk, focusing on current events, will provide factual insights and analytical tools that help explain the social and political debates concerning immigration currently happening in France today. Francesco Ragazzi is currently a Ph.D. candidate at Sciences Po, Paris and Northwestern University. This lecture is generously sponsored by the Jean Brown Lecture Fund of the Alliance Française de Chicago. SOIREE COMMUNE Saturday, March 8, 6:00–10:00 p.m. Entrance Fee: $12 for adults, $5 for children Meet and mingle with people from all over the French speaking world for an evening of food, spirits, music, a screening of ON MA TCHATCHE — a film by Bouba Mangal, a raffle to win two tickets to Europe on Air France, and more! Each participating country welcomes you with a taste of its own particular Francophone culture. There will be Tuareg jewelry and Gnaoua music from Morocco, raclette from Switzerland, and waffles from Belgium. BELGIUM: “Tintin et Moi” — A documentary on Tintin and Hergé , followed by a presentation on “Tintin en Amérique” In French with English subtitles Monday, March 10, 6:15 p.m. FREE. All are welcome. Join us for this fascinating documentary about the life of Hergé and his cartoon success. This film revolves around Herge’s experiences and state of mental health leading up to the writing of “Tintin in Tibet”, often heralded as Hergé’s most personal album. “Tintin et Moi”, which received the Eurodoc prize at Norway’s European documentary film festival in Oslo, and the second prize at the Sunny Side Film Festival in Marseille offers a new appreciation for the work of one of the 20th century’s most appreciated literary artists: Georges Remy, a.k.a. Hergé. Post-film presentation and discussion of “Tintin en Amerique’ and its impact on the European image of Chicago in particular, by Dr. Janine Spencer, Senior Lecturer and Assistant Chair for the French program of the Department of French and Italian at Northwestern University. Film and presentation will be followed by an aperitif offered by the Wallonia Trade and Investment Office and the Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Belgium in Chicago. ROMANIA: Classical Music Concert Monday, March 10, 5:00 p.m. Admission is FREE. All are welcome. PLEASE NOTE: this concert will take place at Ganz Hall, Roosevelt University Your are invited to spend an evening of French and Romanian classical music in the heart of Chicago! Six talented Romanian musicians will perform in the Ganz Hall of Roosevelt University, bringing you the sounds of Claude Debussy, George Enescu, Paul Constantinescu and Nocolae Bretan. This evening is sponsored by the Consulate General of Romania in Chicago FRANCE & QUEBEC: Jean-Benoît Nadeau on « où va la langue française ? » Lecture in French Wednesday, March 12, 6:15 p.m. Admission is FREE. All are welcome. Québecois author and journalist, Jean-Benoît Nadeau, co-author of Sixty Million Frenchmen can’t be wrong! and The Story of French contends that the French language is alive and well, vital, modern, and constantly MAI – JUIN 2005 changing. Monsieur Nadeau will speak about the current state of the French language, the tension between the purists and the realists, and some of the official guardians of la langue française. Jean-Benoît Nadeau was born in Sherbrooke, in Québec and lives in Montréal. He received a BA in political science and history from McGill University in Montréal and has published six books and over 900 magazine articles. Presented by the French Consulate in Chicago, the Délégation du Québec à Chicago, and the Jean Brown Lecture Fund of the Alliance Française de Chicago SWITZERLAND: Soirée Nicolas Bouvier Thursday, March 13, 6:30 p.m. Admission is FREE. All are welcome. Switzerland will present an evening dedicated to Nicolas Bouvier (1929 – 1998), Switzerland’s most famous travel writer, iconographer and photographer of the 20th century. Professor Marie-Simone Pavlovich of the Northwestern University will introduce the oeuvre and life of Nicolas Bouvier. Following this literary introduction, the film “Le hibou et la baleine” (57 minutes) will be shown. Mr. Hank Sartin, film critic of TimeOut Chicago, will then lead a Q +A session. A wine and cheese reception will be offered prior to the program. CANADA & QUEBEC: Food, music and film from the francophonie of the North Friday, March 14, 6:00 p.m. Admission is FREE. All are welcome. Canada and Québec once again join forces to organize a gala evening of food, music, and film from the francophonie of the North. The event-packed evening will begin at 6:00 P.M. with a reception featuring culinary delights from above the 49nd parallel — cheeses, pâtés, charcuterie, wines, beers, and more. Then, at 7:00 P.M., jam to the exciting rhythms of the group Mauvais Sort — Québec folk music with a decidedly modern flavor. Following the concert, enjoy the critically acclaimed Québec film drama, La brunante (“Twilight”). « Monique Mercure dans un rôle criant de vérité… » (Journal de Montréal) In French, with English subtitles (8:30 P.M. – 10:00 P.M.). Special Lecture by Bernard MANGIER Ecrire en français, venir d’ailleurs Lecture in French Lecture in French Thursday, March 27, 6:15 p.m. Admission is FREE. All are welcome. Bernard Mangier, a journalist and specialist in African literature, has worked many years with Radio France International and manages the collection “Afrique” at editions Actes Sud. He will speak about famous authors who write in French though they were not born in France. Three recent French literary prizes, le Prix Goncourt, le Prix Renaudot, and le prix Fémina were presented to American, a Congolese, and Canadian authors. Presented by the French Consulate in Chicago
