The 400 Blows (1959; 99 min.). Directed by François Truffaut; starring Jean-Pierre Léaud. A new 35 mm print of Truffaut's celebrated first feature, a coming of age tale largely viewed as responsible for launching the New Wave. February 1-7. Screening with the short Antoine and Colette (1962).

Maryse Condé, the internationally celebrated novelist and playwright from Guadeloupe, one of the most recognized names in Francophone letters, will be in Chicago February 24-25 for two events you will not want to miss:
Theatrical performance, February 25 at 7:00 pm:
Comme deux frères. This play by Maryse Condé is performed by Compagnie Siyaj, a theatre company from Guadeloupe: a poetic and visceral story about two young men reminiscing about their lives, their friendship and the events that led them to the jail cell in which they are spending the night. "La Francophonie dans tous ses états:" a lecture by Maryse Condé, followed by a panel discussion with several specialists on Francophone literature (Hakim Abderrezak (University of Minnesota), Alison James (University of Chicago), Doris Kadish (University of Georgia), Dominique Licops (Northwestern University) and Pascale-Anne Brault (DePaul University; followed by a coffee break, then reading and book signing. Grande Dictée de la Francophonie 2008
Cette année aura lieu la 11e édition de la Grande Dictée de la Francophonie.
Come and test your spelling skills at this 11th annual event. Children, adults, beginners and pros are all welcome and can compete in one of four categories. February 23 at 10:00 am at Northwestern University, Kresge 1-375.
