Farewell directed by Christian Carion
Opens July 30 |
Engaging, emotional and riveting, Farewell is an intricate and highly intelligent thriller pulled from the pages of history—about an ordinary man thrust into the biggest theft of Soviet information of the Cold War. A piece of history largely unknown until now, Farewell begins in 1981, when U.S./Soviet relations are at their lowest point in more than a decade. A French businessman based in Moscow, Pierre Froment (French director Guillaume Canet, Tell No One), makes an unlikely connection with Grigoriev (Palme d'Or and Golden Bear winner Emir Kusturica, Underground), a senior KGB officer disenchanted with what the Communist ideal has become under Brezhnev. Grigoriev begins passing him highly sensitive information about the Soviet spy network in the U.S. Torn between the fear of putting his wife (Alexandra Maria Lara) and children in danger and the desire to know more, Froment brings the documents to the French government. Soon, the flow of information reaches the White House and brings the Soviet regime to the tipping point of collapse, forcing the KGB to escalate its search for the leak, and placing the two men and their families in extreme peril. Directed by Christian Carion, the Academy Award nominated filmmaker of Joyeux Noel (Merry Christmas).

Me and My sister directed by Alexandra Leclère (2004)
July 21 at 6:30 PM & July 24 at 2 PM
Louise is a charming woman who is disconcertingly open and, at times, lacking in grace. After all, she’s a beautician from Le Mans. Her sister Martine (Isabelle Huppert) is everything she isn’t: elegant, aloof, and obsessed with decorum. Her life is entrenched in the Parisian bourgeois world. When Louise travels to Paris, the two sisters’ worlds collide as Martine can hardly stand Louise’s exuberance and lust for life. Will the bonds of sisterhood enable them to overcome unforgivable behavior and irreconcilable differences? By turns affecting and honest, Me and My Sister casts a sharp eye on the intricacies of sibling rivalry and the (im)possibility of changing who we are and where we come from. French with English subtitles. Co-presented by the Consulate General of France in Chicago, CulturesFrance, the Chicago Cultural Center, and Cinema/Chicago. |

Let It Rain directed by Agnes Jaoui (1960)
Opens July 2
From the celebrated director of LOOK AT ME and THE TASTE OF OTHERS, Agnes Jaoui, comes LET IT RAIN, an endlessly charming and a sharp-witted battle of the sexes. An audience favorite at the New York Film Festival, this charismatic comedy is un-missable for fans of French cinema everywhere.

Breathless directed by Jean-Luc Godard (1960)
Until July 4
New 35mm Print! 50th Anniversary Restoration! There was before Breathless, and there was after Breathless. With its lack of polish, surplus of attitude, crackling personalities of rising stars Jean-Paul Belmondo and Jean Seberg, and anything-goes crime narrative, Jean-Luc Godard’s debut fashioned a simultaneous homage to and critique of the American film genres that influenced and rocked him as a film writer for Cahiers du cinéma. Jazzy, free-form, and sexy, Breathless (À bout de souffle) helped launch the French New Wave and ensured cinema would never be the same. |
|
Wild Grass directed by Alain Resnais (2009)
Opens July 16
A wallet lost and found opens the door to romantic adventure for Georges and Marguerite. After examining the ID papers of its owner, it is not a simple matter for Georges to turn the red wallet he found in to the police. Nor is it that Marguerite can recuperate her wallet without being piqued with curiosity about whom it was who found it. As they navigate the social protocols of giving and acknowledging thanks, turbulence enters their otherwise quotidian lives.

Vive les Auteurs!
July 4 - August 4
Vive les Auteurs is a 10-film series by notable French directors of the past decade. As the common usage of the loanword indicates, there is something essentially French in the concept of the auteur--the director whose style and personal vision shapes a film to the extent that he or she (whether or not involved in the screenplay) can be considered its author in the full "a film by..." sense.
There were certainly auteurs early on in film history (Griffith, Chaplin, Eisenstein, Murnau, etc.), but the concept--so crucial to the evolution of film appreciation--was first articulated in the 1950s by the group of young critics associated with the magazine Cahiers du Cinéma: Truffaut, Godard, Chabrol, Rohmer, Rivette etc. Since then, French cinema has been especially auteur-driven, sustained by a steady stream of individualistic directors who have been as much the stars of French cinema (especially in terms of foreign recognition) as have the actors on the screen. The cinema of the auteur is still flourishing in France, as demonstrated by the work of the contemporary directors represented in this series: Jacques Audiard, Catherine Breillat, Laurent Cantet, Anne Fontaine, and André Téchiné.
LIAISON subscribers pay discounted admission of $7 to any Sunday or Monday screenings in the serie. Discount code: “FCCVA” to be use in person at the box office.

Small Change directed by François Truffaut (1976)
July 2 – 5
Small Change is one of Truffaut's most entertaining films, as well as one of his most adventurous. The subject is one especially close to his heart: the world of childhood, previously explored in such classics as The 400 blows and The Wild Child. There is no central character or plotline. Set in a small town in southern France, the film skips freely from one vignette to another.
LIAISON subscribers pay discounted admission of $7 to any Sunday or Monday screenings. Discount code: “FCCSC” to be use in-person only at the box office. |
|
The Law directed by Jules Dassin (1959)
July 9 - 15
Fifty years after its first release, Dassin’s sexy gem debuts in the U.S. in its original form, in a new 35mm print with newly translated subtitles. In addition to Lollobrigida at the peak of ripeness and a suave Mastroianni, the all-star cast includes Yves Montand, Pierre Brasseur, and fiery Melina Mercouri to amp up this drama of love, desire, and the power of tradition.
LIAISON subscribers pay discounted admission of $7 to any Sunday or Monday screenings. Discount code: “FCCLAW” to be use in-person only at the box office

The secret of Kells directed by Tomm Moore (2009)
Until July 8
Nominated for an Academy Award! From the producers of KIRIKOU AND THE SORCERESS and THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE comes a new film for all ages, chronicling the creation of the "Book of Kells" in dazzling animation that echoes the intricate beauty of the masterpiece from which it was inspired. This medieval tale of monks and Viking marauders has a boy, a forest fairy, a mysterious artist, and his feline muse at the center of a ravishing fantasy that swirls with ornate Celtic imagery and stunning color, accompanied by the haunting strains of Celtic tunes. A must-see! |
|
La Chienne directed by Jean Renoir (1931)
July 10 at 7& 9 PM
Renoir's early sound film thoughtfully observes the vagaries of desire and the random incidents that transform lives. An unhappily married bookkeeper who finds solace in painting, Maurice (Michel Simon), encounters a prostitute (Janie Marese as Lulu) struggling with her pimp and rescues her. The besotted Maurice then installs Lulu in a love-nest where he keeps his own paintings, unaware of Lulu's treacherous plans. Anticipating Renoir's later films in the realist vein, La Chienne is a deeply considered work about the unforeseeable turns in life. Complete information. |
Moulin Rouge directed by Ewald André Dupont (1928)
August 11 at 7 PM
Ewald Dupont's final silent film tells the story of a love triangle between a nobleman, his betrothed, and her actress mother. Filmed in part at the Lido de Paris, the film is sociologically interesting, as it offers an inside look at Parisian nightlife at the time. Andre (Jean Bradin) falls for Parysia (Olga Tschechowa), an actress, and more importantly, the mother of his clueless girlfriend, Margaret (Eve Gray). Tschechowa shines in stunning close-ups, offering a glimpse at the face that charmed Hitler. The film's impressive camerawork and brilliant acting make it one of Dupont's best. Complete information.

Sarah Morton is a famous British mystery author. Tired of London and seeking inspiration for her new novel, she accepts an offer from her publisher to stay at his home in the South of France. It is the off-season, and Sarah fins that the beautiful country locale and hurried place is just the tonic for her — until late one night, when the publisher’s indolent and insouciant French daughter, Julie, unexpectedly arrives. Sarah’s prim and steely English reserve is jarred by Julie’s reckless, sexually charged lifestyle. Their interactions set off an increasingly unsetting series of events, as Sarah’s creative process and a possible real-life murder begin to blend dangerously together. Complete information. |

No Exit by Jean-Paul Sartre, directed by Sean Graney @ the Athenaeum Theatre
Until July 11
"Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does,"once commented Jean-Paul Sartre. In his groundbreaking existential drama, No Exit, a trio of recently deceased strangers discover themselves locked in a windowless room, forced to cohabitate with each other - and only each other - for all eternity. Sartre masterfully employs this claustrophobic scenario to explore the oppressive side of individual freedom. The Hypocrites' production infuses heightened physicality and stunning imagery to create a truly singular version of hell. The Athenaeum Theatre is located at 2936 N. Southport. Phoenix @ Lollapalooza
August 6-8
Grant Park
The French quartet Phoenix has fulfilled its own prophecy, succeeding to instill “Lisztomania” (or, more aptly, “Phoenixmania”) in the minds of millions. Despite the widespread, rightfully manic obsession with the band and their music, a Grammy for Best Alternative Album and shows that sell out in seconds flat, the Phoenix gents remain humble and adorably wide-eyed. Phoenix’s members have worked together in music since their teens, and enjoyed some attention after the inclusion of their music in films like Lost In Translation and Marie Antoinette. The band’s third full-length, 2006’s It’s Never Been Like That, was successful enough to propel them on a worldwide tour and through numerous festival appearances. |
 |
Still, it wasn’t until last year’s Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix that the group’s music met the masses, and we’ve been happily jamming along ever since. In live performances, Deck D’Arcy, Laurent Brancowitz, Thomas Mars and Christian Mazzalai are the instigators of a fantastic dance party. Talented and charming, the group is fun to watch and sing along with, and lead singer Mars often leaps into the crowd, taking a well-earned moment to revel in it all.

Spatial City: An Architecture of Idealism @ the Hyde Park Art Center
Through August 28
Free Admission |
The Hyde Park Art Center presents Spatial City: An Architecture of Idealism, a major touring exhibition of contemporary art drawn from the French Regional Contemporary Art Funds (Frac) on view through August 8, 2010. This is the first exhibition of the Frac collections in the United States, and it will tour the Midwest throughout 2010. Spatial City brings together an international, multi-generational array of artists - with an emphasis on artists living in France - whose work contends with utopian thinking and, in counterpoint, the retreat of optimism in the face of pragmatic reality. The exhibition traces the connection between the vanguard concepts of urban space dominant in the mid-twentieth century and championed by Yona Friedman to the art of the present, bringing together historical and recent examples of artists from the US and abroad. Originating curator Nicholas Frank (Institute of Visual Arts, Milwaukee) worked with participating curators Allison Peters Quinn (HPAC) and Luis Croquer (the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit) to develop the exhibition and tour..
|
 |
The Hyde Park Art Center will host Paris-based photographer Philippe Durand in residence from June 22nd until July 12, 2010. The residency is made possible through the support of the Cultural Services of the French Embassy in the United States. The artist is represented by Galerie Laurent Godin, Paris.

Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Modern Century @ The Art Institute of Chicago - Regenstein West
July 25 – October 3 |

Henri Cartier-Bresson. Juvisy, France, 1938. The Museum of Modern Art, New York. Gift of the photographer. © 2010 Henri Cartier-Bresson / Magnum Photos, courtesy Fondation
Henri Cartier-Bresson, Paris
|
Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908–2004) is one of the most original, accomplished, and influential figures in the history of photography. His celebrated work of the early 1930s helped to define the artistic potential of modern photography. This exhibition of more than 300 images is the first full retrospective devoted to Cartier-Bresson in three decades. It includes both his formally groundbreaking early images and his historically significant postwar work—in India and Indonesia during struggles for independence, in China during the revolution, in the Soviet Union following Stalin’s death—that redefined the field of photojournalism.
The retrospective, organized by the Museum of Modern Art, shows the rich interplay between Cartier-Bresson the artist, gifted at capturing the flux of life, and Cartier-Bresson the photojournalist whose lens shaped our understanding of seismic political and cultural changes across the second half of the 20th century. This retrospective is the first to draw upon the extraordinary resources and cooperation of the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Paris. It will premiere at the Museum of Modern Art in February 2010 and after its Chicago showing, travels to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. |

Pierre Huyghe: Les Grands Ensembles (The Housing Projects) @ The Art Institute Gallery 186
June 24–October 19
Noted French artist Pierre Huyghe uses diverse media—including large-scale installation, public events, and video—to delve into the uncertainties of representation and investigate how narrative models affect our sense of reality. Huyghe’s 1994/2001 video installation Les Grands Ensembles (The Housing Projects) is featured as one of the many provocative works in the special exhibition Contemporary Collecting: Selections from the Donna and Howard Stone Collection. Shown in the Stone Film and New Media Gallery, the work presents a fixed view of two residential towers in a bleak urban landscape, swathed in fog at night. Lacking any signs of human activity, the buildings appear to take on lives of their own as the video’s buzzing electronic soundtrack, composed by Pan Sonic and Cédric Pigot, builds in intensity. |

Mid-Century: Good Design in Europe and America, 1850–1950 @ The Smart Museum
July 8 – September 5
Between 1850 and 1950, progressive artists, designers, and architects decisively reshaped the everyday world of objects. Advocating for design reform—and by extension, social reform—they promoted a host of competing ideologies that embraced aesthetic revolution and technical innovation. This exhibition examines the complex, ever-shifting course of modern design theory and its application in Europe and the United States. Mounted entirely from the Smart Museum’s collection, the exhibition offers close readings of masterworks such as Edmond Johnson’s facsimiles of medieval treasures made for the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago, furniture and leaded windows designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the historic Robie House, and Marianne Brandt’s rare modernist silver tea service, which was fabricated by hand in the metal workshop of the famed Bauhaus. Together, these and other works in a variety of media give insight into the interweaving history and iconic forms that defined the domestic world of modernism during the fertile one-hundred-year period between the mid centuries.
