45th ANNUAL CHICAGO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL 
OCTOBER 8-22 - NOT TO BE MISSED!

Sponsored in part by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, Chicago.
The largest festival of the year is back, with dozens of films from around the world, including once again an impressive program of French films and films in French. This year's highlights include offerings by internationally renowned filmmakers such as Claude Chabrol, Patrice Chéreau, André Téchiné and François Ozon, festival favorites such as Denis Dercourt and Julie Lopes-Curval and many new voices to discover. Gracing the screen will be popular favorites such as Catherine Deneuve, Gérard Depardieu, Fanny Ardant, Romain Duris, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Guillame Canet, Emmanuelle Devos, Jean-Hugues Anglade, Hippolyte Girardot, Vincent Perez and Jean-Pierre Léaud, alongside countless fresh faces. Nothing Personal / Rien de personnel . Directed by Mathias Gokalp, with Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Denis Podalydès and Pascal Greggory. October 13, 14 and 20. Director scheduled to attend.

No Hard Feelings! / Sans rauncune! ( France / Belgium). Directed by Yves Hanchar; with Thierry Lhermitte and Milan Mauger. October 18-20.

Persécution. Directed by Patrice Chéreau; with Charlotte Gainsbourg, Romain Duris and Jean-Hugues Anglade. October 17 and 20. The filmmaker will attend on the 17th.

Five all-time classics starring the quintessential face of the New Wave and one of world cinema's most beloved actors.
Léon Morin, Priest / Léon Morin, Prêtre ( 1961; 117 min.). Directed by Jean-Pierre Melville: starring Belmondo and Emmanuelle Riva. Centers on the sexual and religious tension between an atheistic young widow and a handsome young priest. October 23-29. Check for showtimes

Le Doulos
(1962; 108 min.). Directed by Jean-Pierre Melville; starring Belmondo and Serge Reggiani. A classic of French noir centering around the relationship between an ex-con and his cocky friend. October 25 at 5:15 pm; October 28 at 6:00 pm.

Mississippi Mermaid / La Sirène du Mississippi (1970; 123 min.). Directed by François Truffaud; starring Belmondo and Catherine Deneuve. A wealthy planter takes a beautiful stranger as his mail-order bride, who quickly disappears with this money and appears to re-emerge under a different identity. October 24 at 3:00 pm; October 27 at 8:15 pm.

Pierrot le fou (1965; 110 min.). Directed by Jean-Luc Godard; starring Belmondo and Anna Karina. A restless Parisian ad man runs off with his babysitter to live like a bad boy on the Riviera. October 24 at 5:30 pm.; October 29 at 8:15 pm.

A Woman is a Woman / Une Femme est une femme (1961; 84 min.). Directed by Jean-Luc Godard; starring Belmondo and Anna Karina. A stripper longing for motherhood turns to her uncooperative husband's best friend for help. October 23 at 8:15 pm; October 26 at 6:00 pm.

Vagabond / Sans Toit in Loi (1985; 105 min.). Directed by Agnès Varda; starring Sandrine Bonnaire. Award winning film that tells of the last few months of a young vagabond wandering through the French countryside. October 10 at 1:45 pm, with a pre-screening discussion with Randy Williams at 1:30 pm. Part of the "Exemplary French Film Directors Series."

Voisins Voisines (2005; 90 min.). Directed by Malik Chibane; with Frédéric Diefenthal, Anémone, Insa. Centers on the lives of the multi-ethnic occupants of a low-housing community in suburban Paris. October 14 at 6:45 pm, with a pre-screening discussion led by Dr. Rachel Boue, professor of French at 6:30 pm.

MUSIC

Chicago Master Singers perform a program of all French choral masterworks with the Ars Viva Orchestra under the direction of Alan Heatherington. Organist Nathan Laube will be the guest soloist. The program will feature Maurice Duruflé’s famous Requiem and Notre Père, Charles-Marie Widor’s Mass, Laudate Dominum and Evocation by Marcel Dupré , and Cantique de Jean Racine by Gabriel Fauré. A free pre-concert lecture will be offered one hour before each performance. At the Divine Word Chapel, 2001 Waukegan Road, just north of Willow Road in Techny, Illinois, October 30 at 7:30 pm and November 1 at 7:00 pm. Complete information.

THEATRE

Heroes by Gérald Sibleyras (Le Vent des Peupliers ); translated into English by Tom Stoppard. A comedy set in the late 1950's, featuring three bored WWII veterans looking for adventure. EXPOSITIONS

Chicago-based French artist Chantal Philipon participates in the Ravenswood Art Walk, October 3 and 4 from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. Her work will be exhibited at 3759 N.Ravenswood #226.

Chicago-based French artist Helena Engel curates and exhibits in a group show October 15 - October 27 at The Palette and Chisel, 1012 N. Dearborn.Complete information.

Early Warning: The work of modern dance pioneer Anna Halprin is revisited by French choreographer Anne Collot in a performance entitled: Anna Halprin / Anne Collod & Guests: parades & changes, replays. LECTURE

Christian Gauffre, conférence sur l’histoire du jazz accompagnant les projections des Trésors de la collection Jo Milgram.
