French language immersion in the United-States is an approach to teaching French that involves immersing students in the language throughout the school day. Teachers speak only french to teach academic subjects such as history, geography and science, using a wide range of instructional strategies. The ultimate goal of this type of program is for students to become proficient in the French language in addition to English, and to develop increased cultural awareness. Private or public Foreign language immersion programs vary in intensity and structure according to the model implemented. The following are two main types of immersion programs :

- Total Immersion – Programs in which all subjects in the lower grades (K-2) are taught in French; instruction in English usually increases to 20%-50% in the upper elementary grades (3-6), depending on the program. Initial literacy instruction is provided in French. Programs may continue in middle school and high school.
- Partial Immersion – Programs in which approximately 50% of instruction is provided in French . Initial literacy instruction may be provided in either French or English or in both languages simultaneously. Programs may continue in middle school and high school.

Be aware that these programs do not follow the National French Curriculum . These programs are often designed for non-native speakers, or for students aspiring to become fluent or bilingual in both French and English. The French Embassy works closely with each of these programs.
